"My meaning simply is, that whatever I have tried to do in life, I have tried with all my heart to do well; that whatever I have devoted myself to, I have devoted myself to completely; that in great aims and in small, I have always been thoroughly in earnest. I have never believed it possible that any natural or improved ability can claim immunity from the companionship of the steady, plain, hard-working qualities, and hope to gain its end. There is no such thing as such fulfilment on this earth. Some happy talent, and some fortunate opportunity, may form the two sides of the ladder on which some men mount, but the rounds of that ladder must be made of stuff to stand wear and tear; and there is no substitute for thorough-going, ardent, and sincere earnestness. Never to put one hand to anything, on which I could throw my whole self; and never to affect depreciation of my work, whatever it was; I find, now, to have been my golden rules." -Dickens, David Copperfield

"There are all kinds of ways of imposing your personality...You don't have to roar at people, shout and swear, insult them and jump all over them...[Some treat their] opponents as if they had discovered them on the soles of their shoes. Federer does it a different way. He imposes his serenity on people. And they hate it. You can see them thinking: 'Please Roger. Please hate me. Please snarl at me. Please get seriously angry with me. Because this serenity is killing me." - Simon Banres, Inside Tennis
"Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events." - Sir Winston Churchill
"And let it here be noted that men are either to be kindly treated, or utterly crushed, since they can revenge lighter injuries, but not graver." -Machiavelli
"Undoubtedly, as Mammy frequently declared, Will was something the Lord had provided and Scarlett often wondered how Tara could have lived through the last few months without him. He never had much to say, never displayed any energy, never seemed to take much interest in anything that went on about him, but he knew everything about everybody at Tara. And he did things. He did them silently, patiently, and competently." - from Gone with the Wind
A description of my hero, Will Benteen *TEAR
"Luck is not a directly measurable element of the game because it is what is left when you take everything else away. We measure light, not darkness. We measure sound, not silence. We don't make notches on the bedpost to count the number of cute girls we've failed to sleep with (because quite apart from anything else that would do considerable damage to the bed).
What you need to measure is not your opponent's skill either. Whenever your opponent plays less than perfectly, that's simply a bonus. Forget about it. The one thing it does determine is what proportion of matches we could win if our own play was good enough. That's never going to be lower than 50%. If it's higher, that's simply a bonus.
What we really need to measure is our own skill, or rather our lack of it. What we care about is whether we made a mistake that cost us a game." - mtgsalvation
"There are three kinds of valid explanation for Federer's ascendancy. One kind involves mystery and metaphysics and is, I think, closest to the real truth. The others are more technical and make for better journalism.
The metaphysical explanation is that Roger Federer is one of those rare, preternatural athletes who appear to be exempt, at least in part, from certain physical laws. Good analogues here include Michael Jordan, who could not only jump inhumanly high but actually hang there a beat or two longer than gravity allows, and Muhammad Ali, who really could "float" across the canvas and land two or three jabs in the clock-time required for one. There are probably a half-dozen other examples since 1960. And Federer is of this type - a type that one could call a genius, or mutant, or avatar. He is never hurried or off-balance. The approaching ball hangs, for him, a split-second longer than it ought to. His movements are lithe rather than athletic. Like Ali, Jordan, Maradona, and Gretzky, he seems both less and more substantial than the men he faces. Particularly in the all-white that Wimbledon enjoys getting away with still requiring, he looks like what he may well (I think) be: a creature whose body is both flesh and somehow, light." - David Foster Wallace, Federer as Religious Experience
'Explanation of why did the chicken cross the road'
Ah, this joke is a classic example of meta humor. Normally, the punchline of a joke is some sort of unexpected suprise, some line which you would not normally think of given the circumstances of the joke. However, the joke you gave, "Why did the chicken cross the road?" turns that model on its head. Instead of coming up with a wild and fantastic line, this joke comes up with the most mundane and expected circumstance possible, drawing humor from the unexpected nature of the expected response. - Coca Koala, SA
